Why Do My Ears Feel Full in Spring? Allergies, Congestion, and Hearing

May 13, 2026

Spring is a welcome change, but it can also bring allergy symptoms that affect more than your nose. For many people, spring allergies lead to pressure, popping, and a “plugged up” feeling in the ears. Some even notice muffled hearing or ringing.

If you have ever searched “clogged ears,” “ear pressure,” or “muffled hearing,” you are not alone. The good news is that many of these symptoms are treatable, and a quick hearing check can help you understand what is really going on.

Why allergies can affect your ears

Your ears, nose, and throat are connected. When seasonal allergies flare up, your body can produce extra mucus and inflammation. This can affect the Eustachian tube, which helps regulate pressure in your middle ear.

When that tube is not working well, you may notice:

  • ear fullness or pressure
  • popping or crackling
  • muffled hearing
  • discomfort with changes in elevation
  • ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

When it is probably temporary

Many people notice improvement as congestion goes down. Symptoms that come and go with allergy days, or improve after a cold clears, may point to a temporary issue like pressure buildup.

When it is time to get checked

Sometimes ear fullness is not just allergies. It can also be caused by wax buildup, infection, fluid behind the eardrum, or underlying hearing loss that is now becoming more noticeable.

Consider scheduling a hearing evaluation if:

  • muffled hearing lasts more than a week or two
  • you have one-sided fullness or hearing change
  • ringing is new or getting worse
  • you feel off-balance or dizzy
  • you keep turning the TV up
  • people seem to mumble more than usual

What you can do at home

  • Treat allergy symptoms as directed by your healthcare provider
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid inserting anything into the ear canal
  • Protect your ears from loud noise, especially if you already have ringing
